Low-Level Formatting

QUANTUM HARD DRIVES

By George Snell

Caution! Quantum advise that attempting to properly Low-Level Format your Quantum hard drive will void any existing manufacturer's warranty, and recommend that drives be returned to the manufacturer for any required Low-Level Formatting.   Any attempt to low level format a Quantum Hard Drive is done so at your own risk, therefore.

QUANTUM UTILITIES FOR CHECKING YOUR HARD DRIVE

Since Quantum no longer admits to having made hard drives, the main two utilities they once offered are now available here on our site. Click on the links, and save to a local directory if you need these files.

Download QDPS.EXE

Download ZDISK101.EXE

Quantum offered two useful utilities for maintaining your hard drive - QDPS.EXE and ZDISK101.EXE. Also offered were various dedicated versions of Ontrack Disk Manager. They are no longer available for download.

QDPS is a non-destructive utility. It does not write to your hard drive. It may only be used to test Quantum hard drives that are S.M.A.R.T. compatible. This includes Bigfoot, Bigfoot CY, Bigfoot TS, Bigfoot TX, Fireball TM, Fireball ST, Fireball SE, Fireball EL, Fireball EX, Fireball CR and Fireball Plus KA, and any drive models released since this list was published. It will not work with non-S.M.A.R.T. hard drives. Quantum say this is because "most drives in use today are newer than 2.5 years old". (This is their opinion, as stated in published literature formerly available from Quantum's web site.)

QDPS is a harmless little utility that will not correct bad sectors or tracks, won't destroy your data, and won't remove any virus. It will tell you if your drive is OK, and whether it may or may not be returned to the factory for warranty replacement. Probably won't be, since they no longer have mention of hard drives on their site.

ZDISK is a zero fill utility that will write 0's to your hard drive. Use this to get rid of a corrupted operating system, or to remove a stubborn virus. Use Ontrack Disk Manager, FDISK or another setup utility to reinstall your hard drive. This should work with any make hard drive, but don't consider it if you need to have a really secure format to remove sensitive data.

To use the utility, you will need 2 floppy disks, one bootable, and one blank. This is because the install utility for ZEROFILL will totally erase your diskette before installing itself to a floppy. The entire program and all files only use 113k, which seems to be a waste of good space and rather inefficient. Do not use this utility from Windows. Reboot your computer using a bootable floppy disk, then at the A:> prompt insert the ZEROFILL disk, type   ZEROFILL   press Enter, and follow the on-screen instructions.

See the section on the main page to use FDISK if your Quantum hard drive is not S.M.A.R.T. capable, you have a bad virus infection, you know the drive is out of warranty, or if you have bad sectors that need to be mapped out.
